Plans change when his wife needs a couple of things from the grocery store. Not a big deal, he can be there and back and catch up with the live game in no time. Of course, not everything goes as planned and John may be his own worst enemy.

Can Eric keep the promises Santa Chris made?

When I first saw the titles of these short stories, I was a little put off. I’m a person who hates gender stereotypes. These characters could have really gone to a grating place. Author Benjamin Wallace manages to rise above the expected. He writes characters who do not have the best luck but deeply care about their families. These men go about their misadventures with good humor and good perspective.

My favorite story of the three was [easyazon-link asin=”B005UNHDEI” locale=”us”]Dumb White Husband vs. Halloween (A Short Story)[/easyazon-link]. Chris is horrified that his kids don’t want scary costumes. What’s fun about a regular monkey? Why doesn’t the 3-year-old dress up as a zombie monkey instead? Chris is in love with the idea of being the biggest and best on the block. Of course, as we learn, he’s gone too far in the past which leads to a hilarious encounter with the police. Was I someone previously amused by stun guns? Not sure. Maybe they seemed a little mean but Wallace writes the scene well.

The weakest story of the three, in my opinion, [easyazon-link asin=”B005PK42BS” locale=”us”]Dumb White Husband vs. The Grocery Store (A Short Story)[/easyazon-link]. I do have to give Wallace credit for the picture he paints. I can see my husband not hearing until all deniability is ended by the touch to the foot. Once John actually arrives at the grocery store, his adventures lack the good humor of the other two stories. He’s a man just wanting to get out and get back to his game.

All in all, these were beautifully silly reads. All are short stories and meant to be read in one sitting. I highly recommend these stories and look forward to reading this author’s longer works.
