Essie is hot and a WTF (Werewolf Treaty Federation) happening agent working in Chicago when she’s asked to return to her hometown of Hung Island, Georgia to investigate a case of missing werewolves. When Essie packs her bags in the middle of the night and leaves town and a cheating ex behind, she never expected to see them again. Essie must solve the case quickly and avoid some very attractive demons from her past. [easyazon_link identifier=”0989496082″ locale=”US” tag=”rabidreaders-20″]Ready To Were: Shift Happens Series Book One (Volume 1)[/easyazon_link] was originally released as a novella in the anthology “Three Southern Beaches” released July 2014. Standing at 168 pages, the novel is as slim and shallow as its main character. It seems very much that Essie doesn’t want to return to the backwater southern town from which she sprang, but she’s the only supermodel that is also a WTF agent, so therefore, the only one suited to go deep cover in a modeling agency from which werewolves are disappearing.

Essie is a wishy-washy mess. When we’re introduced to her, Essie tells us that she is a crack agent whose only issues are that she gets mouthy with authority and uses her corporate credit card for shoes. Her strategy to solve her own life’s problems is to pretend they don’t exist. When alpha male werewolf, Hank the Tank, cheats on Essie she slips out of town in the middle of the night hoping to never see him again. Of course, one of the many obstacles that Essie faces is a supremely angry Hank who doesn’t understand why she left. At many points in [easyazon_link identifier=”0989496082″ locale=”US” tag=”rabidreaders-20″]Ready To Were: Shift Happens Series Book One (Volume 1)[/easyazon_link], it’s hard to take Essie seriously as a competent professional. She has the flavor of a little girl looking for a big strong man to solve all of her problems.

Many of the plot lines are contrived and the characters are stock. Essie’s best friend, a gay vampire, is exactly what one would expect in the gay best friend. It would seem that the author, Peterman, modeled Dwayne after gay stereotypes she’s seen on television. Dwayne, with his squealing and dramatics, is like Cam on “Modern Family” but without any of the humanizing influences of that character. Hank is exactly what one would expect in a hotheaded alpha male. What readers may wonder is why it took cheating (and there’s an annoying twist related to that) for Essie to leave but then they are the hot people and hot people belong together.

[easyazon_link identifier=”0989496082″ locale=”US” tag=”rabidreaders-20″]Ready To Were: Shift Happens Series Book One (Volume 1)[/easyazon_link] isn’t all bad. The novel does have a good dose of humor. Peterman does not appear to be an author who will bypass the obvious joke but some of what does land is clever. The novel is light and a very quick read. If you looking for style, you might like “Ready to Were”. If you dislike paranormal, you may still like “Ready to Were” for its shallow charm.

Peterman’s work and this novel are highly rated on Amazon so be sure to check out the five star reviews to determine if [easyazon_link identifier=”0989496082″ locale=”US” tag=”rabidreaders-20″]Ready To Were: Shift Happens Series Book One (Volume 1)[/easyazon_link]is the novel for you.
