DVD_Doctor_Who_Last_Christmas The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenny Coleman) must help scientists plagued by crab-like creatures at a North Pole Scientific Station with the help of Santa (Nick Frost) and his elves.

Readers of this blog will know that I am a big fan of Doctor Who as well as the comedic characters normally played by Nick Frost. In [easyazon_link identifier=”B00QHND1BO” locale=”US” tag=”rabidreaders-20″]Doctor Who: Last Christmas[/easyazon_link] the actor takes a darker interpretation of an iconic character.

As much as I love David Tennant, my favorite companion of recent years has been Clara. She is written as light, funny and adventurous but with genuine heart. In [easyazon_link identifier=”B00QHND1BO” locale=”US” tag=”rabidreaders-20″]Doctor Who: Last Christmas[/easyazon_link], she is able to play that likeable and heart to advantage with a reminder of her humanity. While key characters aren’t dying, theres the reminder that they could. The doctor and Clara get separated and when they meet again it’s with a poignant delicacy. She has been reunited with her dead love, Danny Pink, by the dream crabs and living the life she wishes she had but there are strange warnings that it seems she won’t decipher.

Nick Frost, best known for the Cornetto series of movies as a slacker, plays Santa as light but militaristic in approach. He’s pragmatic, direct and ready to fight if he’s sure he can win. Santa is the key to getting to the bottom of what has happened on the base and how to fix it.

Micheal Troughton, son of the actor that played the second Doctor, plays Professor Albert in the special. Overall Radio Times rated the episode highly in the DoctorWho episode listing and I cannot disagree. The episode if light while insightful and fills out Clara and the Doctor in a way that may not have been logical in another setting.
